Air fryer sweet potato fries are one of our easy weeknight dinner go-tos. They’re insanely simple, healthy, flavorful, lightly crispy, and best of all cheap in a time when paying for basic groceries feels like a hip check to the paycheck. Plus they’re super versatile and pair perfectly with grilled chicken, burgers, pork chops, or even turkey chili.
I’m not exaggerating when I say we make some variety of these sweet potato fries weekly. They’re a dinner staple in our household. Sometimes they’re fries, sometimes wedges or cubes. Sometimes we air fry them, other times we bake them in the oven. We switch up the seasoning or pair it with russet potatoes.
And it never gets old because they are so versatile and so easy to make! There will never be a day when we don’t have a few sweet potatoes chillin’ in our pantry because they are seriously the best.
Ingredients
- Sweet potatoes – leave the skins on for extra flavor, texture, and nutrients. Opt for two medium-sized sweet potatoes or 1 large sweet potato.
- Avocado oil – we prefer to use a high heat oil, like avocado oil or sunflower oil, for these fries.
- Seasonings – garlic powder, smoked paprika, dried parsley, salt and pepper balance the natural sweetness of these sweet potato fries.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Preheat your air fryer to 400ยฐF, if necessary. Not all air fryers need to preheat (mine does not).
Wash the sweet potatoes well with a coarse rag. Cut the potatoes into fries that are ยผ to ยฝ inch wide and 3 inches long. *We prefer skin on for more flavor, texture, and added nutrients, but if you prefer skinless fries, peel the potatoes before cutting into fries. Transfer potatoes to a large mixing bowl.
Drizzle avocado oil over the potatoes and shake/stir to coat the fries. Season with garlic powder, smoked paprika, parsley, salt and pepper and toss until the fries are well coated. Alternately, you can place the sweet potatoes and oil in a bag. Shake the bag to coat the fries with oil. Then add the seasoning and shake again to coat the fries.
Place half of the fries into the air fryer basket. Cook the fries for about 15 minutes. Make sure to remove and shake the basket every 5 minutes to ensure an even cook. Once the fries appear crispy, remove them from the basket. Repeat for the second batch of fries.
Salt fries, as desired, and serve with your favorite dipping sauce or burger. Enjoy!
Fry Variations
- Modify seasonings – make them spicy Cajun fries with Cajun seasoning, cayenne, and/or chipotle powder. Add a little brown sugar and sage for a sweeter fry. Go green with Italian seasoning, thyme, oregano, and/or basil. Give them a lemony zing with lemon pepper. The possibilities are endless!
- Dipping sauces – we love dipping these into our creamy horseradish sauce, honey mustard, or just plain ketchup.
- Cooking method – these fries also do amazing in the oven. Place a baking rack on a baking sheet and spread the fries out. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes at 400F, flipping every 7 minutes.
What to Pair With Sweet Potato Fries
- Burgers – ground beef, turkey, chicken, or even veggie burgers (like our butternut squash burgers) are the perfect match to these fries.
- Grilled/air fryer/oven-baked/or skillet meat – grilled chicken, pork chops, or steak go great with these fries.
- Sandwiches – pulled pork sandwich, sloppy joes, sliders, or even a basic grilled cheese is the perfect companion.
- Dipping sauces – creamy horseradish sauce, honey mustard, maple mustard, ketchup, garlic aioli, sriracha or chipotle mayo, or any sauce of choice.
