This Blackberry Smoothie is lightly sweet, subtly tart, surprisingly creamy, and loaded with fueling protein. It’s the perfect summer smoothie, bursting with blackberries, apple, and banana.
Blackberry Smoothie Ingredients
- Blackberries – Blackberries are the star of the show in this smoothie. We love to grab a few boxes of fresh blackberries when they’re in season and then freeze them ourselves. Of course, frozen berries work as well. Look for firm, deeply colored berries that are not moldy or crushed.
- Banana – Banana help make this recipe super creamy, lend natural sweetness, and pack in potassium and fiber.
- Apple – opt for a sweeter apple, like honey crisp, Fuji, or gala apples for this recipe. They’re going to add an extra kick of sweetness, fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. An apple a day and all that…
- Greek yogurt – low-fat or full fat Greek yogurt works well in this recipe. It lends some extra creaminess and loads this smoothie up with tons of calcium and protein.
- Milk – we used almond milk in this recipe, but feel free to swap with any plant-based milk, like cashew, hemp, oat, or coconut, or cows milk, as desired.
- Honey, maple syrup or date syrup – if the smoothie isn’t sweet enough for you, add a teaspoon or two of maple or date syrup. These natural sweeteners are lower on the glycemic index and are much less processed than cane sugar.

Smoothie Modifications
You can modify this smoothie according to your taste. Check out some of our recommendations below:
- Add protein powder – one of our favorite modifications for any smoothie is to add in a scoop of protein powder. We love vanilla whey isolate or vanilla pea protein (plant-based/vegan option). It adds a huge boost of protein and vitamins and minerals. Just be careful with the sweetness. You may want to omit the apple and syrup to reduce the sweetness.
- Add nuts and seeds – we love folding in nuts and seeds to pack in a few extra nutrients. Blend in almonds, cashews, or your favorite nut butter for a little extra plant-based healthy fats. Or add pumpkin, flax, chia, or hemp seeds for an extra kick of fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats.
- Dairy free/vegan – if you want to keep this smoothie dairy free or vegan, swap the Greek yogurt with your favorite plant-based yogurt, like those made from almond milk, coconut milk, or cashew milk. They will still keep this smoothie creamy and high-protein without including the dairy.
- Extra fruits/veggies – hide some extra fruits and veggies in this smoothie. You can easily hide a handful of spinach or kale, fold in a little avocado, or pop in a few blueberries or pineapple chunks for a few extra health benefits. The smoothie consistency will be quite thick with extra fruit and veggies, so adjust the milk content accordingly or omit other ingredients.
How to Make Blackberry Smoothie
Combine the blackberries, banana, apple, Greek yogurt and almond milk in a blender. Blend until smooth, about 1 to 2 minutes. Taste the smoothie and add syrup, if desired, to sweeten. Transfer to a glass and enjoy!
Tips for Making the Best Smoothie
Check out a few of our super quick tips to help make the best blackberry smoothie!
- Use frozen produce – to keep this smoothie thick and cold, use as much frozen produce as possible. We recommend freezing fresh blackberries and bananas ahead of time or buying frozen fruit. If you use all fresh produce, just add a few ice cubes to the smoothie to keep it nice and cold.
- Prep ingredients ahead of time – if you like a grab-and-go quick breakfast, you can make ahead a week’s worth of smoothie ingredients. Simply combine frozen blackberries, banana, and apple slices in a freezer bag, label for each day of the week, and store in the freezer. Then all you’ll need to do in the morning is throw it in the blender with a scoop of yogurt and splash of milk, blend, and you’re good to go!
- Invest in a quality blender – we make enough smoothies to know that you want to invest in a quality blender to save yourself time and issues. We really love our Ninja, but have also heard great things about Vitamix blenders. Any blender with a high quality, sharp blade and high power motor will get the job done right in 30 seconds.
